BBVA enhances its advisory capabilities in the energy transition across Europe

BBVA Corporate & Investment Banking (CIB) continues to expand its capabilities to support enterprises in their transition towards a low-carbon economy. Through its global Sustainability & Low Carbon Advisory (SLCA) team, the bank works with clients to transform complex decarbonisation plans into bankable projects capable of attracting investment and mobilising capital, positioning BBVA at the centre of the investments driving the energy transition across different sectors and geographies. In this context, BBVA has appointed Mikael Chapel as Executive Director, to strengthen these capabilities in the United Kingdom and continental Europe

The energy transition is generating new investment needs and increasingly sophisticated financial structures. In response to this context, BBVA supports enterprises throughout the entire project development lifecycle, from the early stages of defining transition strategies to financial structuring and access to capital, helping turn these plans into structured projects capable of attracting investment and mobilising financing.

In particular, the bank focuses its activity on sectors where capital intensity and demand visibility support the deployment of low-carbon technologies, contributing to the development and financing of key energy infrastructure needed to advance the decarbonisation of the economy.

To further strengthen these advisory capabilities in Europe, BBVA has appointed Mikael Chapel as Executive Director, who will report to Isidoro del Álamo, Head of Sustainability & Low Carbon Advisory at BBVA CIB. With more than 16 years of experience in the clean energy sector, Mikael Chapel brings extensive experience across the energy transition value chain including clean energy project development, strategic advisory, mergers and acquisitions and the structuring of financing for large-scale energy infrastructure.

Before joining BBVA, he was a director and head of the London office at Green Giraffe Advisory, where he led advisory work on renewable energy M&A and project finance transactions across Europe. Throughout his career he has been involved in complex transactions in sectors such as offshore wind, solar PV and biogas, advising developers, utilities and international institutional investors on the structuring of transactions supporting the mobilisation of capital for energy transition projects.

“The energy transition is driving a new generation of projects that require specialised advisory capabilities to attract capital and ensure financial close. Mikael’s appointment strengthens our ability to support clients in their strategic investment decisions and to mobilise capital towards initiatives that will help them navigate complex business transformations in the coming years,” said Isidoro del Álamo, Head of Sustainability & Low Carbon Advisory at BBVA CIB.

With the strengthening of its advisory capabilities, BBVA continues to consolidate its position as a trusted partner for corporates and institutions seeking to develop decarbonisation projects and channel investment into new energy infrastructure across Europe and globally.
