BBVA acts as sole lender to TEAL Mobility in a strategic transaction to accelerate zero-emission mobility in Europe
BBVA is acting as the sole financial institution supporting TEAL Mobility, a pioneering initiative aimed at deploying a pan-European hydrogen refuelling network for heavy-duty road transport. The transaction falls within the scope of the bank’s commitment to the energy transition and the decarbonisation of one of the most technically and operationally demanding segments within the transport sector.
BBVA is acting as the sole lender to TEAL Mobility, a pioneering initiative that will deploy a pan-European hydrogen refuelling network for heavy-duty road transport. Formed in January 2024, TEAL Mobility aims to install hydrogen stations along Europe’s main transport corridors over the next decade. BBVA’s funding will support the first stage of this rollout, which already features 15 stations operating in major countries such as France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, along with several upcoming projects planned for the next few years.
The development of this infrastructure responds to the growing role of hydrogen as a viable and sustainable alternative for heavy-duty transport. Hydrogen enables rapid refuelling (around 15 minutes), a driving range of up to 800 kilometres, and does not compromise vehicle payload capacity.
In this context, BBVA’s financing supports the tangible and scalable deployment of clean technologies in one of the hardest-to-abate segments of road transport, known for its high logistical and energy requirements. Additionally, hydrogen-powered vehicles emit water vapor, making them a clean alternative to traditional fuels.
Beyond supporting the network rollout, the financing also aims to strengthen the broader hydrogen ecosystem in Europe by generating momentum across the entire value chain, from hydrogen production and distribution, to vehicle manufacturing and uptake by logistics operators.
“This agreement reflects our strong commitment to financing infrastructure that enables the transition towards a low-carbon economy. We support transformative projects that deliver measurable emissions reductions and drive innovation in sectors that have traditionally faced significant decarbonisation challenges, such as freight transport,” said Carlos Zuloaga, Global Sector Head of Energy BBVA CIB.
“TEAL Mobility is developing hydrogen refueling stations alongside the rollout of hydrogen trucks. This agreement moves us closer to our goal of making zero- emission heavy-duty transport more accessible and competitive across Europe,” said Florentin de Loppinot, TEAL Mobility's CEO.
This transaction underlines BBVA’s ability to support its clients as they evolve towards more sustainable and productive business models. The bank aims to position itself as a leading financial partner for enterprises driving the transformation towards a greener, more resilient and efficient economy.
