Summary text:

The fifth chapter of BBVA Greenfluencers features institutional investor Yerlan Syzdykov, Global Head of Emerging Markets at Amundi Asset Management. Syzdykov will tell us how the fund manager began its sustainability journey years ago, as well as explaining the ESG risks and opportunities emerging in Latin America.

Amundi started in 2011, when the fund manager committed to all funds becoming ESG funds or ESG goals. “Our first commitment was to invest in ESG research, and we have developed our own ESG assessment system”, says Yerlan Syzdykov.

The fund manager has started to promote social investment and since 2017, it moved from using exclusionary policies on coal and other less ethical investments to using an ESG 2.0 strategy, which encourages companies to change their behaviour through engagement. In addition, Amundi began working with the World Bank and IFC, launching a $1.5 billion vehicle that promoted green investments and helped finance projects across emerging countries.

During his conversation at BBVA Greenfluencers with Ángel Tejada, Global Head of Credit ESG BBVA, Syzdykov looks to the future and tells us that one of the biggest challenges that emerging markets face in terms of developing sustainable investment is the need to help other countries to be more responsible by educating them about green investment and how to foster its achievement.
