BBVA finances a pioneering wind and battery energy storage project for Aksa Enerji in Türkiye
The USD 124 million financing will support the construction of a wind power plant and a battery energy storage system (BESS) licensed in the province of Mersin, Turkiye under the YEKDEM (Feed-In Tariff), the country's renewable energy support scheme. BBVA acted as structuring bank and lender for this 12-year Sinosure-backed financing.
BBVA has led the structuring of a long-term financing for Aksa Enerji that will enable the development of a 100.08MW wind power plant with battery energy storage capacity. The transaction, backed by Sinosure, China's export credit agency (ECA), reinforces BBVA's activity in ECA-backed financing solutions in the Turkish market.
Mersin Storage RES, which was financed with the agreement, has the feature of being the first power plant in Turkey to receive a renewable energy plant license with storage. When the power plant is completed, it will contribute to the integration of renewable energy production into the grid in a more balanced, flexible and efficient way with its new generation technology and advanced storage infrastructure.
Founded in 1997 under Kazanci Holding, Aksa Enerji is Türkiye's largest publicly listed independent power producer. The company operates 14 power plants across eight countries and has a total installed generation capacity of 3,500+MW.
"The integration of battery energy storage systems with renewable power plants represents an important step in the evolution of the energy transition, enabling more efficient use of energy while supporting the decarbonisation of large industrial energy consumers," said Sarah Yu, Managing Director, Head of Export & Agency Finance Asia at BBVA CIB. "Projects of this kind require increasingly specialised financing solutions, and our expertise in export credit agency-backed financing enables us to support our clients in strategic investments such as this."
With this transaction, BBVA CIB demonstrates its ability to structure international financing solutions that facilitate strategic investments and contribute both to its clients' competitiveness and to the decarbonisation of the economy.
