BBVA is the world’s best bank for green bonds according to Global Finance

BBVA has been given the 'Global Outstanding Leadership in Green Bonds' award by the prestigious Global Finance magazine as part of its 'Sustainable Finance Awards 2022'. BBVA also received two other awards for its green bonds in the Latin American and Western European regions.

These awards vindicate BBVA's commitment to sustainability in the capital markets, where BBVA CIB has been a pioneer. Sustainability is a cornerstone of the bank's bond strategy, as reflected in recent major deals, such as the largest issuance of a hybrid green bond by Iberdrola, where BBVA participated as global coordinator, or the first issue of green bonds of the Spanish Treasury in which the bank participated as a green structuring agent.

Demonstrating its responsibility in the fight against climate change, BBVA approved in 2018 its 2025 Commitment, whereby it committed to mobilize a total of 100 billion euros in green finance, sustainable infrastructure, social entrepreneurship and financial inclusion. Three years later, and after having managed to reach the figure of 59 billion euros, the bank raised its target to 200 billion euros. By March 2022 it had already reached 97 billion euros.

BBVA continues to play a major role in the development of the ESG bond market in Europe, the United States, Latin America and Asia. During the first quarter of 2022, BBVA led issues of green, social and sustainable bonds and bonds linked to environmental indicators, with a total volume disintermediated by BBVA of 1,153 million euros.

Global Finance draws up its ranking based on the opinions of experts, market operators and credit market clients. These awards reflect a broad recognition of excellence among the financial community and in the field of sustainability in particular. In the 2021 edition, BBVA has already achieved recognition as the best investment bank in sustainable finance.
